Paper Clay Painting Guide

Paper clay adds a textural dimension to your painting projects — it takes the form of whichever object you’ve used to shape it when wet. You can then decorate in any way you want and it’s a great, easy craft activity to do with kids.

So, let’s get started!

For kits purchased from 2024 onwards, please jump straight to step 2.

Step 1: Make your paper clay paste (Skip this step if your set comes with coloured pastes)
Only applicable for the kits that comes with the paste making sets - either purchased before 2024 or The Westin Singapore’s kits

Fill a bowl with water and add the pack of shredded paper into the water to create your paper pulp. Make sure that the paper is fully submerged into the water and have it soaked for a minute or 2.

To create your paper clay paste, grab a portion of paper that has been soaked in water and squeeze out the excess water. Split the paper pulp into smaller pieces and place them into a paper cup. For every palm size of shredded paper (before you split them into smaller pieces), you will need to add about 2 scoops of paint (with your ice cream stick) to the paper pulps. Mix paint and binder into the paper paste. Paint to binder ratio should be 1:1.

If you would like the colour to be more vibrant, you can add an additional scoop of paint.

Repeat this step if you need more paste for your colours.

Do note that you are to make paste for 1 colour at a time and fill it into your painting before you proceed to make paste for your next colour.

Step 2: Fill your canvas with colours

Use the tweezer provided to pick up the coloured paste and fill it into the area you need. If the paste is dry, rehydrate it with water.

Next, use the ice cream sticks/metal sculpture tool provided to spread out the coloured paste. You may also choose to use your fingers for this step (our paints are easily washable with water and soap). Make sure that the paste fills the canvas as white spots can be seen if it’s not filled properly. To fill in the gaps, all you gotta do is to add more of the same coloured paste.

Repeat this step until your painting is completely filled with the coloured paper paste.

For Unicorn & Cat canvas designs: You can fill in the eye details and facial line (for the unicorn) with a permanent black marker after your paper paste has completely dried.

Step 3: Let it dry!

Once the painting is completed, set it aside and let it dry in a cool and dry area for a few days. When it is completely dried, you will be able to feel that your painting has a hard textured shell to it, and it is now ready for display!
